From the office worker to the stay-at-home mom to the student staying late preparing for exams, we all need more energy in life. We all face diverse challenges in our own world. However, all of us can agree on one thing: fatigue can be a real and pressing concern.
The Problem of Fatigue
Colloquially speaking, the word “fatigue” simply means “very tired.” After a long day of work, meetings, and calls, it is natural to feel exhausted. However, some of us feel tired most if not all of the time. This is when tiredness begins to affect the rhythms of your life.
The CDC defines fatigue as “a feeling of weariness, tiredness, or lack of energy.” If you constantly feel like this, start searching for where the problems might lie. Are you getting enough sleep? Do you find it difficult to switch off from work? Are you spending enough quality time with your family and loved ones?
Moreover, at a more serious medical level, you may have a condition known as fibromyalgia. According to the NHS UK, fibromyalgia is a condition that can cause extreme tiredness, difficulty sleeping, and increased sensitivity to pain. Patients often describe feeling “not quite right”, even though there is nothing biologically wrong with them.
If you are experiencing persistent, unexplainable fatigue, speak to a qualified doctor. Your doctor might offer you some medications, supplements, or talking therapies that can help.
Fatigue – Being Present
Let’s spend a little time talking about how you can get your energy levels back up. One of the best things you can do is to meditate. Verywell Mind defines meditation as a “a set of techniques that are intended to encourage a heightened state of awareness and focused attention.”
In other words, it’s about being present — really present. Think about what’s causing you anxiety. Reflect on what’s giving you stress. Finally, see if you can take all that in and turn it into peace, calm, resolve, and focus.
Food and Friends
Another great way to increase your energy levels is to eat the right foods. There is some truth to the famous saying “you are what you eat.” Among the foods that give you energy are oatmeal, eggs, chicken, and walnuts. Avoid foods that are high in sugar and carbohydrate. Stay away from foods that make you yawn after eating them. And keep staying hydrated.
Lastly, surround yourself with positive people! There is nothing like being around passionate, driven people that bring out the best in you. Have a core group of friends who have a can-do spirit. The key here is to encourage others and allow yourself to be encouraged in return.
Going the Distance
Finally, it has often been said that life is a marathon and not a sprint. That means it is ok to feel overwhelmed at times. It is perfectly normal to feel like you need some time off. The most important thing you can do for yourself and your future is to look after yourself the best you can. Remember — the best is yet to come.
